Podcasts

  1. Podcasting can be very useful in the educational world. Teachers can use the podcasting to reach a number of students. Teachers can use the podcast to reach students who are “on the go” and those students whose first language isn’t English. Teachers can also use podcasting to reach students who may have learning difficulties. For example, Podcast could be used as a way to leave directions to an assignment for students that may have reading difficulties.
Podcasting helps students learn skills that help develop communication, problem solving and how to think critically and analytically (Dale, 2007). Research also found that the student’s levels of anxiety dropped while the students were using podcasting in their courses (Dale, 2007). I believe that students could also use these podcast to revisit previously taught material. With students having the ability to access the podcast on their own time, it gives the students the opportunity to manage their own learning. Teachers can introduce new concepts and provide links for students to use in their own discovery learning. Teachers can create their own podcast or download one already available. Having podcast as an available resource, students could create their own podcast to showcase their learning as a culminating activity at the end of a unit or lesson. Students are also using podcast to stream the school’s radio broadcast or new show. Students can tune in and hear the upcoming events from around the school, as well as, keep up with the news updates about their classmates or school.
Not only could teachers and students use podcasting, but administrators could use podcasting as a way of broadcasting professional development for teachers.

  2. I agree that podcasting can be used in many different ways in education. A teacher can post a daily or weekly podcast on their classroom website that summarizes the weekly assignments or reviews key concepts. The students, as you said in your post, can then independently learn at their own pace. I like the point you made about English language learners. Students could read texts while listening to them being read aloud. This could have a tremendous impact on their ability to understand not only what is going on in the classroom, but also everywhere else around them. I also believe this could help students taking foreign language courses.

I haven't thought about using podcasting for professional development. This would be an effective use of time. Instead of taking precious time at a faculty meeting or training meeting, teachers could access the podcast via the internet on their own time.

  3. Those are some wonderful ideas for using podcasting in the educational environment. The idea of using podcasts to deliver professional learning reminds me of the learning modules we created for our Instructional Design class.

I echo Sara's thoughts: being able to access training on your own time is a great feature for teachers, instead of having to attend "one more meeting."

How would you as the Media Specialist implement podcasting or assist teachers with utilizing this format? Are you knowledgeable in the steps for creating a podcast, or do you have resources to help teachers?

    Great post! :)

  4. I love the idea of podcasting for professional development. Not only would it save you from attending another meeting, but you could save the podcast and have it to refer to as needed.
We have been encouraged to give students more choice lately and what a great tool to offer students as an option for a project.
I had not though about specifically using it with English language learners. What a great tool to introduce and reinforce vocabulary skills.
I think it would be awesome for the media specialist in the school to provide a "how to" podcast for teachers to encourage the use of them in the school.

  5. I like the idea of podcasting when it is the teacher who has recorded information for the student. It is good to be able to listen to at the student's convenience and have for review when necessary. For the student who needs to have step by step instructions, this is an acceptable method of doing that. Anytime information can be recorded for later use, it will benefit those using it.

  6. I think the idea of using podcasting for ESOL students is great! I think it would really benefit students at my school. Podcasts could take the place of card readers by allowing students a more engaging and motivating activity. Students view and listen as they review language. The teacher could create podcasts that cover materials and their students could partner with others in the class. As students become more familiar with language and vocabulary they might create their own podcasts to see and show others how much they've learned.

  7. Podcasting offers several great ideas for integrated into the curriculum. Podcasting is always a great way to communicate throughout a school or a classroom. I would love to use podcasting in my own classroom for teaching purposes. I teach Kindergarten, so not all of my students can read, but games and learning materials could be used to create a podcast that all students could use. Listening to stories would also be a great idea for a podcast. The ability to podcast offer differentiated instruction for all students, which is important in our education world. In order to reach all learners, and create life-long learners out of students, we need to be able to provide access to different options of learning. Podcasting shows to be an ideal tool for doing just that. Technology is so important these days that students should start learning at a young age how to use and take advantage of it. This is one great tool to do just that. Podcasts are an excellent source for teachers, students and administrators to provide high quality education while reaching all students.

  8. I agree that Podcasts are very useful and provide meaningful ways to promote learning. My mentor is going to use Podcasts for my student's book reviews. Other students will be able to read the reviews. I think this is a great way to promote books in the media center. I plan to use Podcasts in my reading classes. Listening to stories on Podcasts would be ideal for my struggling readers.
